THERE is something totally decadent about playing your favourite PC game on a 30-inch LCD monitor with stereo sound from two banks of speakers - one on each side. But to do this while watching your favourite team play in the grand final in one corner of the screen, is to really thumb your nose at all the other plebs out there. The DV300 is capable of all of this and more, even though it was not really designed with this sort of use in mind.
It was actually designed as an information display for train stations, airports and shop displays. However, to use it just to show arrivals and departures would be a crime to those of us who could think of far better uses for it.
The DV300 is first and foremost a monitor and there are actually two models - the DV300, which comes with a built-in PAL/NTSC TV turner and the 301B, which has no tuner. As a monitor it's a 29.5-inch WXGA (1280x768 resolution with 176 degree viewing angle) LCD, but if you are thinking of just hooking it up to your desktop PC and using it for spreadsheets and word documents, look elsewhere. It's a bit big and very over indulgent for that sort of thing.
If you want a mute display, go for the 301B, but if you want something that you can connect a host of AV devices to including your home theatre system then this is for you. Of course, it's also ideal in the boardroom (which might make it tax deductible if you played your cards right).
The DV300 takes 10 minutes and eight screws to set up (four for the stand and four for the speakers), then it's just a matter of connecting what you want to it. The DV300 has multiple video inputs allowing display of PC, TV, VCD, HDTV, DVD, Progressive DVD and camcorder. You can connect a set-top box, Pay TV, or any console to it and of course, there's a choice of both digital and analogue PC connections.
Each new connection is detected automatically and the on screen menu, which is accessed through the remote control, is intuitive and easy to use. As a monitor it has a very impressive 16ms refresh rate, which means it can handle games like Doom 3 and Counterstrike very nicely.
As a TV it looks great, as a games monitor its stunning, as a combination of the two it delightfully indulgent. Oh, and as an information display it's not too bad either.
