Sony’s SDM-HX73 was an extremely attractive TFT with plenty of features and performance for your buck. The specifications that set it apart from the rest were the dual RGB D-Sub connector for two analog inputs, the 400:1 contrast ratio and the 400cd/m² brightness ratios, a combo that’s impressive indeed.
This was another of the high scoring TFTs in the DisplayMate test suite, returning great scores for colour combinations, dark grey-scale and colour intensities and just bettering the CMV in the other tests.
In our real-world suite the SDM-HX73 scored high again, with clear DVD images, highly legible text at tiny point sizes and a crisp desktop. The panel also came with three preset display modes, all of them excellent. These were designed for enhancing movies, games and PC, and were great for toggling when you changed usage modes.
The monitor itself is a thick, CRT-looking, model but most of its girth was given to a large black sliding panel on the rear that hid the power and monitor cables beneath when slid back, giving the display an air of neatness. A great screen, but also quite expensive.
