The problem with having a DVD player, cable TV or a VCR is that when you want to use them you’re usually relegated to the lounge room where they’re set up, and not the secondary comfort of a spare room, the kitchen or your bedroom. With many households owning more than one television set, this means that adjunct pleasures such as watching a DVD in bed are verboten strictly because it’s too much effort to drag the DVD player into the bedroom and hook it up, or it’s too expensive to run cabling through the walls.
Enter the AV901 Visionmaster AV Sender, a set of small units designed to transmit audio and video throughout the house. Primarily analog focused, the AV901 transmits via radio frequency (RF) on the 2.4GHz range, and is capable of transmitting crystal analog TV signals and stereo audio.
Quite obviously, the system is split into two units - the sender and the receiver. The sender has RCA video and audio inputs, plus aerial in/out. This way it acts like a pass-through for the host TV. The receiver has only aerial out, plus RCA video and audio out.
The system transmits about 100 metres clear line-of-sight, but with a much reduced range we managed to get it to broadcast through several plaster walls. But the trick if you’re going to do this is to fiddle with the aerials and get them lined up as well as you can, and try to keep the sender/receivers mostly out of the way so they don’t get knocked out of alignment.
It’s an amazingly simple system to use, and it also thankfully comes with all the cables you need to hook up your equipment. Best yet, it also has a ‘remote extender’ function which lets you use the included remote control to operate your gear (VCR, DVD player) from the second room.
The whole unit lacks a polished design, but it works well and considering the hassle it helps you avoid that’s more than good enough for us. At $179 it’s also an affordable purchase.
