It's tough to find a point to begin describing this MFD, its plus qualities are numerous and evenly spread across the unit, making for an impressive product. Packing an 8MB RAM module, this multi function device supports a high 1,200 x 4,800dpi max resolution copy function, integrated modem and USB 2.0 interface for speedy data transfer.
One drawback is the inability to use the copy function without the software package installed. This is a minor inconvenience, although we don't think it's a major concern, given the likelihood the user will install the supplied bundle before using the hardware anyway.
Re-badged by Dell but made by Lexmark, this unit, like the other two Lexmark models in this roundup, features a proprietary 30V power supply and Lexmark installer and operation software. The software itself is fairly easy to use and navigate; ensuring even the most inexperienced of users are capable of getting up and running in as little time as possible.
Snapping open the cover half way, we find the cartridge cradles ready for installing the supplied 82 black 83 colour cartridges tucked away in the left hand recess. The kickstand style prop supports the lid scanner and allows you to work on the unit without lopping off fingers or having to hold the lid when changing cartridges - a little touch, but definitely a welcome and well-thought out one.
The inclusion of plenty of shortcut buttons on the topside of the chassis allows for fast mode changing, again very beneficial to the inexperienced desktop user.
Our only real beef with this unit is its operating volume, which is rather loud, although given the performance and cost, this would be very hard to pass up for anyone after a cheap purchase printer, scanner, copier and fax machine in one.
