BVG's Learning Digital Imaging Training is a collection of four tutorial CD-ROMs including Using Digital Cameras, Using Scanners, Learning Adobe Acrobat and Learning Photoshop 6.0.
Designed for beginners, each tutorial uses the same navigation and step-by-step approach, introducing the user to the tutorial material, exploring basic concepts then moving on to more advanced techniques.
All of the tutorials are clearly narrated without jargon. They are visually simple to follow and provide enough interaction to remain interesting. However their usefulness varies with the material depth in each topic and comes up short for more advanced users.
Navigation is reasonably intuitive: each tutorial uses a chapter-by-chapter approach with introductions. Unfortunately, there are no contextual links to definitions or related topics, which is unhelpful when skipping ahead to complex subjects or going back for a refresher. Furthermore, the 'click here' interactivity in the tutorials, make it a watch, listen and learn experience, rather than a practice and learn one.
The best tutorial is 'Learning Adobe Acrobat' with excellent material depth. The Scanner tutorial was decent if basic, covering the key aspects of using any flatbed scanner and useful material around removing red eye, retouching pictures and scanning line art. The Photoshop 6.0 tutorial is also decent, covering how to import and modify images and create images from scratch. However the complexity of this software meant that this tutorial could only do justice to its most basic features.
The 'Using Digital Cameras' tutorial is disappointing. It covers the use of three digital cameras: the Nikon Coolpix, Canon Power Shot and Olympus C-3030. But, as every digital camera has different characteristics it is best to refer to instruction manuals instead. The tips for taking digital photos were more useful but poorly illustrated and, like most of the material here, is only useful to beginners.
