The NIP-2000 is effectively a massive heatsink designed to siphon thermal energy from the bottom of hot-running notebooks and keep them performing optimally. It has a fluted base to dissipate heat, plus a fan to help airflow and its tilted design makes using a portable keyboard a little more comfortable.
The NIP-2000 did manage to cool down our test notebook, although the heat dissipation varied from place to place. Closer to the fan, the temperature dropped almost 10C, from 44.4C to 35.3C. At the front, the temperature decrease was less pronounced, with the difference peaking at about 6C.
The NIP-2000's most significant flaw is the fact that most notebooks don't actually sit flush with the object underneath them, and this small gap significantly reduces the heatsink's cooling efficiency.
If your notebook often gets excessively hot (above 60C), then you might find some value in the NIP-2000. For most notebooks though, heat isn't really a big enough issue to worry about.
