Even if the Twinhead Efio! 2003CTZ couldn't hold its own with the big boys here when we benchmarked it, we were highly impressed with the unit's features and pricing, which countered its relatively low performance and rocketed it into the top three in the Labs.
At first glance, the smaller 12.1in TFT and keyboard mark this out as a basic notebook, but its 256MB RAM, DVD-ROM, multiple USB ports and FireWire connectivity elevate it to one of the better-featured models on test.
The Efio!'s small form factor implies fragility but it's actually one of the sturdier models with a solid magnesium alloy case, so it's more likely to still perform after a hammering, unlike some of the other models that we'd be scared of accidentally bumping. At almost half a kilo lighter than any other model, it's also ideal for travel.
The small size may mean it's light, but the smaller keyboard reduces its appeal. Even though the main QWERTY keys are full-sized, the function keys are rather narrow, meaning that you may mis-key more often.
That aside, the Efio! 2003CTZ is a good notebook all-round. Its $2,199 price is highly attractive, and its three-year warranty means that if you did encounter problems you'll be well covered. While not quite good enough performance-wise to make it as the Labs Winner, we have no hesitation in recommending the Efio! 2003CTZ.
