The Complete Digital Photography is an excellent and comprehensive book about all aspects of digital photography. The author makes a strong distinction early on however: this is a book about digital photographs taken with a digital camera, not film photos scanned to be manipulated. This is an important point, as the book goes into great depth about how to take photos under varying conditions and then manipulate them afterwards.
It also covers all aspects of digital manipulation (reliant totally on Adobe Photoshop) but is perfect for turning good photos into great ones. There are many colour photographs and examples of what to look for (or look out for) and a bundled CD contains JPEGs of every photo referenced, plus tutorial videos and demo versions of graphic software.
If you care about your digital photos beyond party snapping, and want to go digital then I highly recommend this book.
