Not a bad tome to have in the computer room, the PC Repair Bench Book, by R Glister, is geared more towards the beginner tinkerer than the hardcore techie, but it's chock full of good information. Much more descriptive than "Upgrading and repairing PCs" (March 2003, page 63) but without the depth straight away, the PC Repair Bench Book is broken into 10 major sections.

These include: motherboard and components; storage devices; sight and sound systems; communications and networking; operating systems; configuration and maintenance. Each section is divided into many chapters, which walks you through an overall guide to the subject, some theory behind the concepts, and then getting right into it almost down to the PCB and the capacitors.

Full of photographic guides and bundled with a companion CD that includes the title in eBook format, a handy "Find-a-fix" HTML file, and some token shareware programs.

While the CD is basic, the book itself is ideal for the budding techie and would make a great learning companion on the subject.
