The IBM NetVista M42 business PC offers a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 with 256MB DDR RAM and a 40GB hard disk. Video is handled by the Intel 845G graphics controller built into the motherboard. It also offers six USB 2.0 ports, two serial ports and a 10/100 Ethernet port.
The T541 flat panel display was featured in last month's massive TFT roundup, in which it proved to be an average performer (May 2003, page 75).
Steering away from a small case in favour of the ability to upgrade, the M42 is a full desktop. There is only one bay for a 5 1/4in drive - less space than a typical tower - though all three PCI slots are free. The black case features a lock and tool-less entry, making securing or popping the hood a simple task. While missing a reset button, it does have case-intrusion wired to the security subsystem. Two USB ports are located in front with the other four spaced apart in the back, avoiding cable clutter. The supplied IBM mouse is not optical and has no mouse wheel, which was somewhat disappointing.
A standout feature of the NetVista M42 is the comprehensive measures in place to protect and secure your data. The motherboard features IBM's Embedded Security Subsystem 2.0. The security system, disabled by default, provides a hardware layer of encryption. Software to work with the security can be downloaded from the Web. Another highlight is the IBM Rapid Restore package that images your data onto a hidden partition, which furthers the M42's ability to protect your data.
The M42's fans powered down soon after boot up, which initially worried us, until we discovered the thermostatically controlled CPU and external fans shut off when not required, reducing workplace noise and power consumption.
The IBM NetVista M42 places deserved emphasis on security and manageability, and the one year on-site warranty delivers peace of mind. Overall, a balanced business system with a long shelf life.
