Also known as the 'EB' series, the Protg disks are Western Digital's budget 5,400rpm option. During testing of the 40GB Protg we found that its lack of high specifications resulted in comparatively low performance, and it was outshone in most of the benchmarks by the other 5,400rpm drives we tested.
While the Protg managed to pull ahead of the Maxtor and Seagate 5,400rpm disks in some of the benchmarks, but for the most part it was dire. It does have a more significant weakness though: a high price. At $3.63 per GB it's very expensive for its poor speed rating you'd be better off forking out the extra $10 and going for Western Digital's 40GB Caviar 'BB' instead which offers better overall performance.
