Being the least expensive camera in the Labs this month, the Fujifilm FinePix 2400 Zoom also possesses the lowest specification, with a 2.11 megapixel CCD, and a maximum resolution of 1,600 x 1,200. This however does nothing to disadvantage the FinePix which put on a good showing against the higher specified more expensive models on test. The test images taken at maximum quality and resolution show that the FinePix is quite capable of producing solid images, the detail level in the results proving to match commendably well against the competition. Contrast is strong with good delineation between the differing colour elements in the test subject across the full range of colours. The FinePix image was a little low in terms of brightness, the colours lacking a little in vibrancy and accuracy in representing the test subject.
The simple feature set, when combined with the more than adequate image quality will suitably fulfil the needs of those looking for an inexpensive camera that is light and compact - good for taking fun shots of the family or friends, or more serious subjects. Access to the menu options happen via the 1.6in LCD screen, a menu button and a directional button, all located conveniently under the thumb when holding the camera normally. Users can adjust the quality settings from 640 x 480 to the maximum 1,600 x 1,200. Options are also available to switch between manual- and auto-focus, and adjustments to the image to suit the environment you are shooting in such as white balance. The Exif Launcher software for the PC makes downloading images via the USB data connection easy - the camera itself installing as a USB device. Though not rating well overall when compared to the competition this month, bear in mind that the FinePix is significantly cheaper than every other camera in the Labs, and does a fair job despite its simplistic feature set and low specification compared to the competition this month. An option that budget buyers should look out for.
