Dells Inspiron 8000 brings the idea of a desktop replacement even closer. Not only does the 850U feature an 850MHz mobile Pentium III, but its backed up by 128Mb of SDRAM, an UltraDMA/66 hard disk and a generous 32Mb helping of video memory. Even the 15in TFT screen is innovative, with a resolution of 1,600 x 1,200. Multimedia features are catered for in abundance, with a new stereo speaker set designed by Harmon/Kardon and an eight-speed DVD-ROM drive. To complete the Inspirons specification, Dell includes IEEE-1394, USB and S-Video ports, as well as the usual parallel and serial favourites.
