Symantec’s latest offering is lighter than ever and an extremely effective security package. And get this, a RAM footprint smaller than Kaspersky

"Yes it's fast ... but"

Pros:
Fast install, init, scan, and low resource usage.

Cons:
Not user-friendly
False positives (tech tools)
Misses infections
I have come across this product many times recently in my job as a computer tech for LEC. A few things i have noticed with this product is that it's install time is incredible, probably the fastest i have ever seen.

The resource usage is pretty good and the initialisation time for the program is quick. Overall this is a very fast program. Given the terrible resource-hungry performance of Symantecs products over the few years all of this is not suprising. They really HAD to do something with this as they had established themselves a name as being the most resource-hungry security solution around, capable of destroying the performance of just about any computer. I had even heard jokes within the industry about Nortons itself being "a virus with a GUI". I have found that even the average computer-illiterate customer coming in to our store would tell horror stories about Norton, or would say straight off the bat; "i've been told to stay away from Norton".

So i am happy for Norton, and for their loyal customers that they have finally addressed this issue with their new product.

BUT! It has probably the worst user interface i have ever seen on an anti-virus. Just navigating to disable the real-time protection was not an easy task, and even after finding it Norton STILL blocked 'Cain and Abel' as i was trying to use it on the machine. Why give the user an option to disable the protection if you are just going to continue protecting anyway? I had to UNINSTALL the program in order to work on this particular computer.

Also, A problem that i have come across on two occasions in just the last week is that it is still missing infections. We regularly have customers in the store with Norton 09 installed on a computer that is infected!

The last example of this was a computer that came in and after removing Norton and scanning with Eset we found 44 infections. The worst part of this was that some of the infections were as simple as MyWebSearch.

I will continue to not use this product or recommend it to customers until i feel confident in using it to effectively clean out a computer.

In my personal opinion it still has a long way to go.

"Norton Internet Security 2009"

Pros:
Light, Fast and Effective.

Cons:
None that I can see.
I have just installed Norton Internet Security 2009 and am blown away.
This was the easyest and quickest install of any Sucurity Suit that I have ever had. In fact, it was completerd so quickly I thought there was more to go and someting was wrong, but no.
Running the program, including scans and updates is also smooth, seamless and again, quick, not to leave out the small footprint on the hard drive, a definate bonus in a world where "Must Have" downloads use up space so quickly.
With all the Hype about most of the promoted products in this world one gets a bit jaded, a bit cynical because of the actual product falling way short of what was promised. This product, however, performs as stated and that has me starting to believe that "Pigs" given the right conditions, can actually "Fly" and that somewhere there IS, a "Free Lunch".
Isn't it good to know that there is actually a Company "out there" that will put out an outstanding product, even though all it really has to do is just be marginally better than the rest to win sales.

Norton has gone the extra mile with their Internet Security 2009 and I for one thank them for doing it.

I've been using NIS for a few weeks now and it is great. It's very easy to use and is very light on my system which runs a load of apps including a FOREX trading platform. My system is fast and responsive - the way i need it to be and i am confident of it's protection capabilities. Further to that i find NIS easy to use, full of features and customizeable to suit my needs. I didn't like Kaspersky and found it too heavy. NIS 09 gets my votes and a big thumbs up.

Well hacker16, perhaps you should try it and you will eat your words. They have just proved they do have what it takes and given that a professional reviewer also thinks so just proves you are very worng. It wouldn't have been recommended either if it was not good. I think you'll find PC Tools was quite heavy and slows basic systems down quite considerably compared what NIS 09 can do.

I used to HATE Symantec until version 2008 of N.I.S. then I was a convert and THIS version is even better and faster with MUCH lower imprint on systems. I have this running on 10 Celeron 2.4 workstations with 1GB ram and they run AS FAST with it as without it... that's impressive !

I had tried a number of Antivirus apps but NONE of them were as good as N.I.S. 2009 for detection, stability, ease of use (which is WAY better than version 2008) and having the lowest impact on speed... and this is on a DOMAIN as well. The firewall is tight enough to stop the rubbish but loose enough to allow all domain traffic without interference.

An EXCELLENT product !

I hear what you all are saying, and appreciate the 3 month trial in the magazine, however I still have nightmares about trying to un-install an old version.
I might be tempted to install it on a virtual PC if I keep hearing good reports, however Symantec need to pay a price for causing so much grief. and that price will be reluctance to get former clients back.
GGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Cheers

I sell this software at work and it annoys me how many people hate Norton software because a few years ago they were crap. People can't handle the fact that some brands change. Look at Dell - they used to have the worst name for after sales support, now they are one of the best. Same things goes for fanboys - just because a brand was the best in its class a few years back, doesn't mean it's still the best thing out there. AMD and Intel have shown just how wildly the pendulum can swing over a few years.

I have been using Norton AV for the past 5 years and I can't say I have had a problem, apart from the issues that are common to all AV's and those are easily avoided or fixed.
I see no reason for me to change to another product because I am not into fixing what isn't broken, just for the sake of it.

Norton has done nothing to regain respect from anyone, and I for one, having lost many nights sleep trying to figure out what was ailing my and other computers when it was in fact sheer stupidity in programming by Norton wont give them another dollar.
Corperate bullies dont deserve customer support. The Symantec name is MUD!

I've had good experiences with Norton software ever since Peter Norton's first software was released and stick by it, or maybe that is sticj buy it.
In the last couple of years, I have had some serious problems with my PC and Symantec have beed brilliant and dedicated about getting me back to work. In one case, while they were trying to fix my problem my PC hardware died and they patiently waited until it was back online.
This is why I'll keep using and paying for it. For me, NIS (& NSW) are not luxuries, or even essential software. What I buy is insurance from Symantec, insurance that my files are safe.

I had used Norton AV until I upgraded to Win XP - I decided to upgrade to the full IS 2003(?) version due to net banking etc - the program was a DOG !!! I tried the new 2009 version as I have had a few issues with my CA IS - the 2009 NIS is great - does not kill the computer's performance or get in the way when browsing - I am starting to be converted !! When my other licences run out I will be seriously considering NIS 2009!

I have NIS2008 and have had Norton AV for over 6yrs now. I used free AdAware in conjunction until that didn't work and decided to use Spyware Doctor. This detected 108 viruses/malware in my computer yet a NIS scan does not detect any. I am annoyed that these viruses/malware have been able to infect my computer even with NIS running actively. Symantec does not seem to offer any virus removal options on their website anymore. Can someone pls help?

A lot of free scans go overboard and detect everything and anything...even if it doesn't have any impact on your PC...just to try and get consumers to purchase the full version.

I was an avid user of Norton AV 2007, but found it a big resource hog and switch along the line to test out many AV's and Internet Security Systems in 2007 from McAfee, AVG7, Kaspersky and Trend Micro, though none of these I liked either, I actually stuck with Nod32 until discovering NIS2009 and found it to be one of the zippiest AV's out there, and it does the job just fine. I am also using End Point Protection for over 12mths now on one of my laptops which is any Symantec product, and that is also a light system great for laptop use.
BTW, the main reason they purchased PCTOOLS, is not because of their AV that's for sure, I have a 12mth Key, and It gives so make false-positives back and quarantines 'good' apps it's really a gut ache to use, and not a very good structure for an AV - Spy Doctor is why they purchased PCTOOLS, as Symantec as yet to have a fully feldged SpyWare system, and with the core of Spy Doctor (Award Winning for many years running) they are sure to build a better following on the side of SpyWare rather than Just AV's.

NIS2009 and 2008 Are well worth the purchase. The Anti-Virus System is also a great buy if you are using a free spyware tool such as AdAware or SpyBot Search & Destroy with this. (and of course a Firewall such as Commodo Firewall PRO Free, PCTools Pro Free among others are great free firewalls to use).

i wont buy or install anymore norton products
i installed anti virus with up to date defs)and it let a virus through (not from an email attatchment but a rar file that Norton HAD scanned and cleared)
i tried to get norton to fix it but there is a $140 charge for them to do this
AVG (free) found it and deleted it for FREE (funny that isnt it)
all the time Norton Blamed me....how can they blame me when it was their product that failed to protect me???

I don't have any particular love for one software company or another, and in general I don't mind paying for software, but only in proportion to the value it provides me (or my family/friends who invariably bring their PCs to me for fixin'). Consequently I have had to wrestle Norton off a number of PCs over the years when the 12 month subscription on their Harvey Norman purchase ran out.

Norton simply made it too hard to remove all the components of their software - especially when it was thrust upon users who didn't necessarily need such a complete and expensive solution. The average user isn't protecting national secrets or customer details, they are protecting family photos and preventing identity theft. AVG is more than capable of delivering sufficient risk mitigation for the average home user. Indeed, Microsoft updates, backups and a hardware firewall would probably meet the needs of an internet-savvy user.

I'm sure companies can change their spots prueg, but as a support vendor, you of all people should know that once bitten, twice shy with products which impact your ability to support them.

I'm curious about people's experiences uninstalling NIS 2009. Is it easy? Is your system / registry clean? I'd be happy to give Norton their second chance (on machines where it is appropriate) as long as I know it's not going to burn me when it's time to uninstall.
