Note: This review is based on the TH-46PZ81, which Panasonic tells us is a close overseas equivalent of the Th-46PZ800A in Australia. Both TVs are Full HD, 3 HDMI inputs, and analogue and digital tuners, while the TH-46PZ800A has 2 component in ports (instead of 1 for the TH-46PZ81), and 2 S-Video.

Panasonic’s track record with plasma TVs is exemplary and the TH-46PZ81B is another cracker. Standard definition channels look great through the TV tuners.

The picture is stable and colours are rich and inviting. Switch to the HD content pand the level of detail and edge definition reaches a new high. The Panasonic does a fine job of upscaling standard definition material to match its Full HD resolution, Snakes On A Plane highlighting the vivid colours and smooth motion.

Smooth HD motion
Make the transition to Blu-ray and the Panasonic’s qualities are even more obvious. Motion during Cars is smooth and silky, with no sign of judder.

Colours are expertly balanced and refrain from appearing overcooked and garish. The TH-46PZ81B really gives the Sony KDL-46W4000 a run for its money although the Sony arguably has the edge with outright resolution and clarity.

Black depth is decent and contrast levels are on a par with the top class performers. Sound quality is acceptable: the internal speakers sound solid and full-bodied, not tinny and insubstantial.

The TH-46PZ81 shouldn’t be applauded only because of its features – it delivers a great plasma TV picture.
