Forget budget DSLR, this is for serious photography. Extravagant in almost every way, the D700 is superbly responsive and produces stunning images

Considering Nikon is entering a well-established market of semi-professional DSLR's they really should have looked at the price a bit closer. More than happy to stick with my Canon EOS40D which is the BEST camera i've ever owned. A close second would be the Canon EOS400D for the more budget minded.

Considering Nikon is entering a well-established market

Your comparing apples and oranges. The D700 is a level up from your 40D, more comparable to the 5D which is close to the same price.
Historically Nikon have been 'in the market' longer than Canon. In the DSLR game they have had several pro and semi-pro cameras, although Canon did take an early lead they are slowly losing ground now (pull you socks up Canon, where's the new 5D?) Want something cheaper? Consider the new Nikon D90 or a budget D60.

I kind of want one - gotta say that I thought that my D70 had colour reproduction issues (esp with green + blues) and despite owning a few lenses for that - I kind of always wanted to go rebel/canon. Might just buy this when it gets a bit cheaper as I already own lenses. Good stuff though :)

PC Authority,

FYI.

The D300 sells for around $2600, making the D700 $1000, not $2000, more expensive than its nearest Nikon neighbour.

It’s a great deal at this price, but Canon’s 1000D is fractionally edged out by the Sony Alpha A330
