Google sales jump 67 per cent

Search, YouTube and Gmail generate big bucks.

Google has reported profits of more than $1bn in the fourth quarter of 2006, logging a 67 per cent increase in year-over-year revenues to $3.21bn.

"Our impressive performance in the fourth quarter demonstrates the continuing strength of our business model across Google properties and those of our partners," said Google chief executive Eric Schmidt.

The majority of Google's revenues came from its proprietary sites. Google-owned sites and services, such as its search engine, the YouTube video service and Gmail email network accounted for 62 per cent of the company's overall revenues.

Revenue growth for the Google network reached 80 per cent and outpaced that of its Adsense programme.

Adsense sales increased by 50 per cent to $1.2bn. The network allows bloggers and other web operators to place Google ads on their websites.

The continued growth has come at the expense of its chief rival, Yahoo, which reported much more modest earnings over its most recent quarter.

The troubled search company logged a 13 per cent revenue increase from the fourth quarter of 2005 and a net income of $265m, roughly a quarter of Google's.
