The Dick Smith customer database is for sale

The Dick Smith customer database is for sale

It's all got to go - including data on all of Dick Smith's customers.

With Dick Smith closing down over the coming weeks, the ill-fated company's receivers are looking at every way to recoup money to cover debt. In store, there are some pretty tasty bargains to try and push stock out the door, but there's a lot more up for sale as well.

Including customer data.

Receivers Ferrier Hodgson has placed a newspaper advertisement seeking parties interested in purchasing everything from brands and trademarks to domain names. Part of the grab bag is also all the data that Dick Smith has gathered from customers signing up for newsletters and other promotions.

There's a hitch, however, as Business Day reports. On the form where customers could sign up for Dick Smith promotions, the store promised that "Dick Smith will never sell or share your information".

So much for that.

If you are or have been a Dick Smith customer, and have signed up, we recommend changing your details before they're sold.
