Valve getting serious about promoting Linux

Valve wants you to try Steam on Linux - and it's pretty serious.

Valve's Gabe Newell has made no bones about his thoughts on Windows 8. Long story short, the big guy at Valve feels the operating system is a disaster for game developers. He and Valve feel so strongly, in fact, that not only are they putting a lot of development resources into bringing Steam and Steam games to Linux, they're also now actively promoting users to switch operating systems.

The About page on the Steam website now features a prominent section on Linux, including a handy link to the latest Ubuntu build, and links to installation guides for the OS.

Steam for Linux is now available in Beta to all users of Steam. With a growing catalog of Linux-supported games and an active Steam for linux community group, the timing's right to jump in and share your feedback.

The timing's right? Very interesting.

The just passed CES in Las Vegas saw Valve and its PC hardware partners unveil the first iterations of the long-rumoured 'Steam Box', so this new push to get PC gamers to move to Linux could be a strong indication of the preferred OS on any future Box releases.
