One of the great rivalries of space sim fans back in the day was always between fans of Elite and Wing Commander. They both took very different approaches to space operatic gaming, but were both also classics in their own right. And, now, both games - or at least their creators - are discovering a whole new lease on life via Kickstarter.
Chris Roberts may not be rebooting Wing Commander (much), but his Star Citizen project has obvious roots. David Braben, though, who's just launched a kickstarter for his new space sim, is being much more obvious about where he's coming from, with Elite: Dangerous.
"Elite: Dangerous is the game I have wanted Frontier to make for a very long time," he says on the Kickstarter page. "The next game in the Elite series - an amazing space epic with stunning visuals, incredible gameplay and breath-taking scope, but this time you can play with your friends too."
The game's going to fully leverage modern PC power, with procedurally generated but artist-driven art, content, and missions. There'll be a tonne of ships to acquire and upgrade, choices to make as to how you play, and a fully realised galaxy to explore.
And, it'll multiplayer, using a combination of peer-to-peer and serving technologies to make playing with friends - or enemies - seamless.
