Far Cry 3 PC system requirements announced (Updated)

Far Cry 3 PC system requirements announced (Updated)

Ubisoft's tropical holiday simulator gets a list of requirements that hint at a lack of support for WIndows XP (and no mention of online DRM).

Even though we know that the development of Far Cry 3’s cross-platform island environment is a far cry (pun intended) from Crytek’s PC-only open world of the original game, there is still a glimmer of hope that Ubisoft will deliver the kind of delicious eye candy that the franchise demands.

Given the just announced PC specs for the game, we still aren’t quite sure just how grunty a game it will be, given that the specs encompass a massive swathe of hardware from the past few years. What is clear is that the game will run on some seriously low end machines, while still delivering DirectX 11 support for those with more recent hardware.

As is often the way, the system requirements are somewhat vague, and indicate that the game won’t support Windows XP. This is due to the minimum requirement of a DX9 compliant GPU with Shader Model 4 support – while DX9 is supported under Windows XP, Shader Model 4 is part of the DX 10 specifications and hence indicates that the game will only run on Windows Vista, 7 and 8.

What we can also assume, given Ubisoft’s begrudging change of heart over its always-on DRM, is that the game will have some kind of one-time activation, but it shouldn’t require a constant internet connection as most Ubisoft games of recent years have. Of course, the requirements don’t make any mention of needing an internet connection, but we assume that is just an oversight on Ubisoft’s part.

The specs below are from the official announcement on Far Cry 3’s forums, we’ll update them if we hear anything more about the specifics of Windows XP and online DRM support.

UPDATE: We have now recieved the full press release from Ubisoft, which adds the following information, confirming the need for a one-time activation.

Laptop versions of these cards may work but are NOT supported. These chipsets are the only ones that will run this game.

A one-time activation of Far Cry 3 for PC is performed via Uplay PC. An internet connection is required for this one-time activation process. Once activated, the game can be played online to enjoy new social features in single player and multiplayer, such as Friends, Party and Chat, or switched to offline mode in the Uplay PC settings menu for a single player experience without broadband connection.
