RIP Paul Steed, video game artist

Paul Steed was many things - gamer, artist, and more than a little controversial. But he created some of gaming's most iconic art.

RIP Paul Steed, video game artist, animator, author, and modeller. He passed away on August 11. No details have yet been released about what got him in the end, but we can say it well before his time.

Steed was a games industry veteran, and though he famously never touched a mouse until he was 27 - according to him - he started in the field in 1991 at Origin Software as a sketch artist. From there he worked at Virgin Entertainment, Iguana and id Software - though he was fired from id, and John Carmack had more than a few... interesting things to say about the man.

Regardless, all you have to do is take a look at the games he's contributed to to feel a sense of loss. Most recently, he's been a regular on the GDC circuit, and written a number of books on modelling and animation, and was working on casual gaming projects.

He also featured in a classic issue of Atomic, back in issue 37 all the way back in 2004. 100 per cent Steed, indeed.
