DreamWorks signs on for Need for Speed: The Movie, film critics everywhere commit mass suicide

Electronic Arts sells the rights for a Need for Speed film to DreamWorks. Kill me now.

Up until a moment ago, I would have bet dollars to donuts that the sentence "You know what would sell? A Need for Speed film" had never before been uttered.

Sadly, it appears, I would have lost.

EA's just announced that DreamWorks Studios has acquired the film rights to the racing game franchise. The plan - or, at least, what I am laughingly referring to as a plan - is to fast-track (get-it?) the film for a 2014 release. Already rumoured to be on board in the director's slot is Act of Valor (and annoyingly fun piece of war-porn) vet Scott Waugh.

I predict explosions, on top of what will basically add up to a Fast and Furious knock-off. The film is not meant to be based on any particular games in the series, but EA will play a role in production.

Woo... hoo.
