Future tech: e-volo unveils 18-rotor helicopter prototype

We can't wait to take this 18-rotor helicopter for a spin. Birds watch out...

No, that's not a typo – e-volo really is working on an 18-rotor helicopter. Even though the Volocopter concept has yet to be built, this bizarre personal transportation vehicle is about to take its first flutter into reality.

The rotors are powered by 18 electric motors and 30mins of fly time should only set you back US$10. Owners will be able to cruise around scaring townspeople for up to an hour at 60mph, at altitudes of up to 6,500ft – sounds like a fun afternoon to us.

Three versions of e-volo's Volocopter are in the works, which include a single-seater for commuters, a larger two-seater version and an unmanned model for deliveries.

With a two-year development time chalked up and no price details as of yet, it might be a while before you're commuting to work in a gargantuan helicopter – but it looks like it'll be worth the wait. Time to start saving...
