See if you have an IPv4 or IPv6 connection

Today, many of the web's big players have switched over to Internet Protocol version 6. Find out whether you're connected to iPV4 or iPV6 with this Microsoft widget.

Today you may notice news all over the Internet about the World IPv6 Launch; the official launch date for the new Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).

IPv6 is a necessary upgrade to Internet connectivity that makes room for 3×1038 IP addresses  (that's 340 trillion trillion trillion). Compared to this number, the 4 billion IP addresses available in IPv4 looks piddling to say the least. In other words, the problem of dwindling IP addresses and NAT-workarounds are about to become a thing of the past.

Following a successful trial last year, the world's major ISPs, home networking vendors and web companies have come together to permanently enable IPv6. Internet Service Providers are already turning on IPv6 connections for their customers - but how do you know what kind of connection you have right now?

One of several ways to check is to click this link to this Microsoft Web page about IPV6 - a widget at the bottom of the article will tell you what type of connection you have.

There's also a stack of information on how Windows 8 makes use of the new Internet Protocol.

You can find out more information about the importance of IPv6 in the video below:
