Alan Wake’s lead writer teases a new title in the series

Sam Lake, lead writer of Alan Wake’s, teases a new setting and, potentially, a new protagonist.

I’m a sucker for all things Alan Wake. I bought both the original game and American Nightmare on Xbox 360, and then not so long ago on PC all over again, because there’s just something about the way that Remedy Entertainment tells a story that is just very me. Whether it’s Max Payne or Alan Wake, I’m drawn into Remedy’s game worlds for reasons beyond third-person action.

Max Payne creator/original likeness/lead writer Sam Lake, who also happens to be the lead writer on Alan Wake, has teased in a tweet that Remedy Entertainment is hard at work on the next Alan Wake adventure. ‘It’s all true. "It will happen again, in another town, a town called Ordinary." It’s happening now.’ The tweet was accompanied by a blog link to some rather Wake-ish writing, despite the fact that the blog is attributed to a ‘Samantha’.

The blog post talks about the importance of light, a young man with dark hair who was “wearing a funny jacket with old-fashioned elbow patches”, and waking from a dream to discover at least one shadowy figure outside. Given that the Alan Wake story was built on the idea of the titular character’s creative creations coming to life, it would be interesting to see if the ‘curse’ could be passed on in other ways to other people; perhaps Samantha is a new protagonist who contracts the Wake curse by dreaming about Alan Wake? Time will tell.

The “town called Ordinary” line in Lake’s tweet also reeks of Alan Wake’s nightmarish adventures moving into the everyday world. Hopefully, this also equates to an increase in scope, beyond the confines of sleepy ghost towns.

What do you want to see from a new Alan Wake game?
