You might think that things couldn't get more grim for the guys laid off from 38 Studios last week.
Sadly, you'd be wrong.
According to Gamasutra, now out of work employees are now finding out the hard way that houses that they thought were sold on their behalf by 38 Studios, as part of the company's relocation to Rhode Island, have not in fact been sold. Some 38ers have been contacted by their banks, asking them why mortgages are not being paid.
38 Studios moved to Rhode Island to take advantage of lucrative State loans, though paying those loads back were part of the straws that broke the camel's back. Employees were under the impression that the company was handling house sales, and many had started mortgages on new properties.
So, for some of these folks, they are now without work, without healthcare, and looking down the double-barrel of two mortgages. Hopefully some have found work in the generous round of offers from other companies following the layoffs, but it must be a terrifying prospect for those still out in the cold.
In related news, insiders have said that even though work had been done toward patching the game, that work is now not likely to ever see the light of day. The whole Amalur project is now pretty much dead.
