Sony Music Unlimited app to launch for iPhone

Sony's music streaming service will arrive on the App Store this week – should Spotify be scared?

The App Store can be a perilous but exciting place for Apple's competitors – some, like Microsoft, have even released iOS apps before supporting its own mobile OS.

Sony announced a few months ago that it would be rolling out its Music Unlimited streaming service to iDevices and this week it's set to make good on its word.

The music streaming app, which has 15m tracks for $4.99 a month, will be coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch this Friday (25th May) but there's no iPad compatibiity for now.

The advantage of choosing the Music Unlimited app over Spotify is that if you've already got a house stuffed full of Sony gear, you'll be able to listen to music on anything from a Bravia TV to the PS Vita and PS3. You can also pay for cloud storage for your own music library via Music Sync.

And we can look forward to more Sony Entertainment Network apps as we could see Sony pushing its movie content not only to Android phones like the impressive Sony Xperia S but also to rival handsets like the iPhone.

Look out for the Sony Music Unlimited iPhone app at the end of the week and give it a whirl with a 30 day free trial.
