Pebble smart watch for iPhone and Android breaks Kickstarter record

Pebble smart watch for iPhone and Android breaks Kickstarter record

23,000 people have pledged over $3m between them to get their hands on this e-paper smart watch – here's why you should too.

Mash up the geek cred of Sony's Smart Watch with the easy to read, long lasting display of the Amazon Kindle and what do you get? Kickstarter's biggest ever funding project – the Pebble smart watch.

The Pebble watch will connect to your iPhone or Android phone via Bluetooth allowing you to change your music, see Facebook, Twitter and email alerts, check the weather and see who's calling all without handset leaving pocket.

You can also check your calendar and set vibrating alerts on the 144 x 168 black and white e-paper display with Android users able to see SMS messages.

And if you get bored of these standard notifications, try strapping the Pebble to your bike to use as a cycling computer for speed and distance stats. Devs will be able to get stuck into the Pebble SDK and prototypes from August too.

The "dream team" behind Pebble, Alerta, already have a BlackBerry compatible watch but for now there's no sign of a Windows Phone or BlackBerry compatible Pebble. Then again, with over US$3.4m to play with, Alerta might just decide to wipe out any smart watch competition in one big, crowd funded sweep.

The Kickstarter project is open until 18th May and you can get a Jet Black Pebble watch for US$115 plus shipping.
