YouTube is converting all 1080p videos to 3D

The video king of the internet is embracing 3D in a big way – get your 3D specs ready.

Sure, a lot of computers don’t have 3D capabilities – but with smart 3D TVs streaming YouTube, the video giant has decided to automatically convert every new 1080p video upload to 3D. But is that real 3D you ask?

YouTube says that its clever 3D converter uses the growing library of true 3D videos on YouTube to learn the difference between that and 2D. It uses color, spatial layout, motion, and other characteristics to create 3D depth for each frame on a 2D video. Hey presto, instant 3D viewing. All you have to do is choose 3D from the quality settings menu – and crack your 3D glasses out too, of course.
