Ghost Recon Commander - a real game... on Facebook?

Ghost Recon Commander - a real game... on Facebook?

Can a Facebook game ever be a hit with actual gamers? The guys at Loot Drop hope Ghost Recon Commander can do the trick.

Whenever my girlfriend spots me playing games in my iPad, she dismissively encapsulates her gamer scorn with the phrase "Hehe - Facebook games". My own rage aside, it sums up the attitude of most enthusiast gamers to titles like Farmville and the rest of the casual crowd. However, the just announced Ghost Recon: Commander is hoping to hook serious gamers into the casual market.

The game was scooped by IGN, and you can check out the official Facebook page of  the game here. Made by John Romero's Loot Drop, a veteran Facebook developer, it certainly has the pedigree and it seems that Ubisoft is getting ever more serious about making its Ghost brand ubiquitous on all platforms.

Ghost Recon Commander is shaping up to be interesting, at least. It's a tactical game of the XCOM school, with tight social integration - your three man squad is made up of 'your' soldier, and the soldiers of two friends. There's cover, line of site, and all the other things you'd expect in such a game.

Hmm... but Facebook games? Really?
