New iPad (iPad 3): Apple's most breakable tablet yet?

It’s Apple best iPad to date, but if you’ve got the new tablet, it’s worth knowing that it’s also the most likely to end up cracked or smashed.

Apple’s new iPad (AKA iPad 3) is an amazing tablet. One look at that shimmering Retina Display screen and we were smitten.

Yet there’s a problem. Because each of Apple’s iPads is more easily broken that the last. SquareTrade, a warranty supplier, has found one of the reasons more iPad 2s end up cracked, dented or smashed than the original iPad has less to do with its slimmer form and more to do with Apple’s Smart Cover.

Owners who dropped their iPads often grabbed hold of the cover, not the tablet, in their attempt to save the falling tablet. The magnets yanked free from the tablet, leaving the iPad 2 to fall to its splintery doom.

It stands to reason, then, that Apple’s meatier iPad 3 will disconnect from the Smart Cover more easily than the iPad 2, and its extra heft could also cause it to fall more heavily.

We still think Apple’s iPad 3 is the best tablet in the world. But if you’re a butter-fingered gadgeteer, you might want to stick to your original iPad. Or take out some decent insurance.

Link bait, and I was hook, line and sinker. This is a pretty long bow that's being drawn here, in that the sheer mass of an object is going to be the prime reason it breaks, rather than its structure.

Awful piece, 100% agree with above comment.

I have no issue with Apple bashing, but this article title is something I would expect from A Current Affair etc. what a load of rubbish. How is this different to any other tablet on the market?

We've had 2 screens broken out of our 50 ipad2s in five months, and I would certainly agree with the premise of the article that the ipad screen will crack if dropped a certain way, even from knee height. I would also disagree with the suggestion that any case eliminates the risk entirely. One spectacularly smashed screen happened in a fully enclosed, well-padded case, when it fell from a car passenger seat onto the tarmac and landed on its corner. Apple does not generally warrant against accidental damage, by the way, though it may offer you a slightly reduced purchase price for a replacement ipad, and will presumably refurbish your damaged unit and resell it.

Not too sure what to say to those above who disparage the article author for stating facts, so I won't say anything.

A heavier ipad will be at greater risk from an identical fall. This is because it has greater momentum at impact, and will therefore compress that point of the case more than a lighter ipad falling at identical speed. The greater the distortion of the case, the more likely the screen is to crack. End of physics lesson.

Heavier, thinner glass. Mass AND structure DO play a part. It's a choice - lightness vs. toughness. If you want hardy. get a Panny ToughPad. To the critical posters: Buy one & drop it to prove them wrong.

Looking around for unbiased facts we can see that at a bare minimum:

. ipad 3 (the tablet who shall not really be named) gets hotter than its predecessor.
. The battery meter is pretty inaccurate
. There are some wifi issues
. The thing does smash more easily than before - not unique to their tablets, BTW.
and ...
. Apple are handing back money because of advertising that 4g works on their aussie website, when it doesn't here. If apple do that - there's more than smoke - there are mirrors, too. Usually they deny.

Pointing out fact doesn't make you a 'hater' as some of the more puerile insist. My imperfect Sammy phone thankfully doesn't smash to a million bits after a one meter drop. It keeps going but is never worshipped.

Speaking of which (for some) It will be interesting to see if that Samsung ceramic back materialises on the Galaxy 3 in a month. For those with Mrs. Bucket's materials knowledge: That's CERAMIC like the brakes of many super-cars, not CHINA like grandma's good tea set.
