ACT shows why it’s the capital of Australia by trailblazing a state-level R18+ rating

Thank the gaming gods, we’re still moving in the right direction.

Forgive my French, but it's bloody refreshing to be reporting a whole lot of positive news of late that relates to the introduction of an R18+ rating in Australia. What used to be a screen-punching affair filled with headlines laden with disappointment after bitter disappointment has been replaced, now, by triumph and victory as we edge ever closer to the 1st of January 2013: the day that is set in semi-hard stone as the dawn of an R18+ rating for games in Australia.

According to the ABC website, the ACT is set to live up to its name and be the first to act on the move to introduce the R18+ classification for games at a state level after the proposed legislation recently passed through the House of Representatives.

ACT Attorney-General Simon Corbell solidified his commitment to an R18+ rating in the Australian territory. “The ACT will be the first jurisdiction to progress a bill giving effect to the Commonwealth’s decision to implement the R18+ category in Australia. This is part of a national reform that will allow adult gamers to view R18+ material in the same way that can already be done for film and printed material.”

Careful to appease the remaining conservative naysayers, Corbell went on to add that the R18+ rating isn’t just there for the benefit of adult gamers.

“[A]t the same time it will also provide protection to parents and children by giving parents better guidance about what material is and is not appropriate for people under the age of 18.”

Can I get an amen?
