Apple’s Tegra 3 claims challenged by Android manufacturer

Apple’s Tegra 3 claims challenged by Android manufacturer

Is the chip powering the new iPad 3 really four times faster than Nvidia's Tegra 3? Or is Apple dressing up the truth?

Asus has served up a riposte to Apple following last night’s new iPad announcement, which saw Tim Cook claiming that its A5X core was four times faster than the Nvidia Tegra 3.

Apple's attempt to focus on the A5X's quad-core graphics capabilities was a sly attempt to draw attention away from the fact that the A5X is a dual-core processor (read more about the new iPad's specifications here).

If you’re talking about GPU then the Tegra 3 (as Asus pointed out in a rather sarcastic Tweet) has 12 cores. So, discounting the fact the new iPad has 1GB RAM, it’s tough to see how Apple could reach the conclusion that the A5X was four times faster than the Tegra 3. Benchmarking can be done on many different figures.

Until a new iPad is properly benchmarked Apple's claim will remain just that – a claim. Apple is famous for staying out of the stats race.

Tests will only 'prove' one is faster if you can run exactly the same OS, RAM and apps on it - can you?

Smoke and mirros open to fan-terpretation :)

Apple are good at smoke and mirrors I wonder if they have patents for them? :-b

They very nearly sucessfully patented a 10.1" rectangle when they challenged Samsung in the biggest anticompetitive action I have seen in the courts for a long time. I love how how they compare two completly different architectures against eachother with no benchmarks to back it up. Typical Apple!

And the fans gobble it up ... yes apple make good stuff, so do many others. Some have the utter temerity to be better in one or more ways.
