The NBN in Sydney: where and when

The NBN in Sydney: where and when

Here's an overview of what NBN Co's maps tell us about which suburbs in Sydney are getting the NBN.

If you live in Sydney, unless you live in a new development, you'll have yet to experience the Internet via the NBN.

So far, Sydneysiders have looked on as stories, photos, and reviews appear online as locations like Armidale, Brunswick and Willunga are connected.

The NBN Co. lets you brows a map to see locations where NBN work is in progress, or will be in the next 12 months. There's a new three-year rollout plan due by the end of this month, but in the meantime, we decided to take a quick look at the situation in Sydney so far.

In short, new housing developments are getting in first. We count 25 new developments where work has started on NBN connections, from south as far as Spring Farm and as far north as Pitt Town. We count seven new developments where the NBN is listed as available.

These housing estates are among the first places to get the NBN because the rollout there is treated on a demand basis. There's more explanation from the government here and NBN Co here, but part of the reasoning is that this lower costs by using the open trenches, rather than going in and digging up the ground again later.

So what about everyone else? We count eight places where work is listed as having started, from Lidcombe and Rookwood, to Penrith, Richmond and Blacktown.

There are a further six areas listed as "work commencing within one year".

The big picture

Overall, across Australia the number of premises where work has started is at least 121,500. In total, the current rollout plan covers 758,100 premises - this includes places where work is scheduled to start by the end of the year.

NBN Co. estimates it takes an average of 12 months from the time work starts at each NBN site until services are available.

It would be good to see a report on Melbourne's NBN developments.
