Samsung takes the wraps off its new quad-core chipset – could this be the heart of its iPhone 4S-killer?

Samsung Galaxy S III quad-core Exynos processor

Samsung has taken the wraps off its new quad-core Exynos chipset – the processor that's almost certainly going to be packed into its upcoming Galaxy S III superphone.

That'll pit Samsung's forthcoming hardware against the rash of quad-core Tegra 3 devices we're expecting to see poking their noses over the MWC parapet. The new Exynos has four Cortex-A9 cores which have been redesigned to pay a 25 per cent power dividend over the current-gen Exynos and – according to EE Times – extend battery time by shutting off individual CPU cores. That means it uses almost half the power for regular tasks and 3D games could render with even more buttery smoothness.

All that points to a 1.5GHz quad-core Samsung Galaxy S III with dazzling graphics being pumped to a Super AMOLED Plus HD display, a long battery life and, of course, a trimmer form. Doesn't sound like the sort of thing we'd turn our noses up at.

Samsung will be showing off the new Exynos at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona – and we'll be bringing you the latest news from the show. We'll be keeping our peepers peeled for any new mobiles packing this quad-core powerhouse – like, say, that Galaxy S III.

iPhone killer ? Never. Its not just the product, its the marketing. And when you have a product AND marketing like Apple...

What is it with you PC&T_ loonies (and your POMMIE cousins at Stuff)?

Every new product out there you 'report' on is going to be an iPhone or iPad killer according to you guys, and not one has yet come close. How many has it been - 999 with 0 hits?

That's one disgracefull batting average!

On to the real worl. - TI have recently displayed their latest dual core OMAP processor that kicks the proverbial out of the current quad and 5 core units out there.

Simple reason, they use an A15 core design. 2 x A15 beats 4 x A9. Seems just as everyone is rushing out quad cores and making a song and dance, they are already old hat.

I think Apple should be recognized as a religion or a cult! Such devotion!

I agree - iphone killer is a much hackneyed phrase that many of us are tired of.

Anyway, the other makers seem to be aiming a lot higher, witness:

. Google glasses,
. Ubuntu on a smartphone for a low end PC experience (that's all most want - most of the time. The tablet market proves that little cpus are fine for many)
. IBM's molecular and graphene transistor research
. The advances in TVs over the last 3-4 years (if you're into TV)
. That weird idea of a projector in a phone from Sam..

There's no need to limit yourself to competing with just ONE (conceited) manufacturer's idea of what is "right" as that is only ever temporary. I doubt ANY makers are actually doing that, no matter what the romantic faithful say. It's progress on all fronts. Some companies may be left in the courtrooms wondering what happened to the future.

No devotion involved.

Just get sick of the headlines that are usually based on some faint hope or wishful thinking.

Have no issue whatsoever with anyone coming out with a product that does knock iPad/iPhone off their respective perches.

'iPhone killer' is what poor journalists use to generate hits. They don't care if the product is a turd sandwich.
