Viral of the week: Scale of the Universe 2

Two 14 year olds have built a scale diagram of the entire universe: from quantum foam to the Virgo Cluster. See it in action here.

Have you ever wondered what the smallest thing in existence is? The answer to this question (and countless others) can be found at Scale of the Universe 2; an interactive scale diagram of the universe.

As its name implies, Scale of the Universe 2 attempts to accurately scale the entire cosmos, along with an array of major Earth-bound organisms and landmarks. It includes everything from the string in string theory, through to dust mites, Red Wood trees and the Virgo Cluster of galaxies.

When you move the slider bar to the left or right, the graph glides in and out (the background even changes colour as you leave the Earth's atmosphere). Clicking on each picture, meanwhile, brings up its real-world dimensions and a brief explanation.

Impressively, the Scale of the Universe 2 project was created by a pair of 14-year old twins in California. When we were their age, we were struggling to glue solar system dioramas together.

The illustrations are rather simple, but it's still a sight to behold. To see it in action, click here.
