Video: DARPA's Big Dog LS3 robot struts its stuff

Big Dog's big brother gets its first test in the wild.

Regular readers will be familar with the original BigDog quadruped robot, which we featured in our Creepiest Robots of All Time gallery.

The robotic 'pack mule',  which is capable of carrying up to 150kg, was created by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the US army. It boasts onboard sensors to perceive obstacles in its environment and path-planning capabilities to avoid them.

The new version, dubbed LS3, is designed to be "significantly quieter and faster" which sounds a bit scary to us. It also has a much higher carrying capacity for longer mission durations than its BigDog predecessor.
