Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich coming to Samsung Galaxy S II and Note in March

At last your ICS jitters will be over as the software update rolls out for Samsung's headline smartphone hardware

Samsung Galaxy S II owners and Samsung Galaxy Note owners alike can rejoice this March as the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich software update rolls out to them at last.

The Norwegian branch of Samsung has confirmed development of ICS is on schedule for a release at the end of this quarter, meaning the wait is finally over. Facial recognition unlocking, beautiful multi-tasking, a better browser and a lovely new task manager will be coming to the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note soon. Mind you, with the Galaxy S III incoming, Samsung might've left the upgrade a bit late for impatient early adopters.

Being =d> OPEN SOURCE =d> I would have thought all the Android fanbois would have written their own version of ICS by now and hacked their GSII to show free Foxtel adult programming.

Yes, their system gives them the 'freedom' to sit and wait for their phone supplier to decide if they will install the current (or even previous) version of the O/S, or leave them in old version limbo.:-s

March ICS for my phone from SAMSUNG - sure, great.
I'm with Telstra though, and haven't even been bug patched to 2.3.5 yet (still running 2.3.3). Maybe March next year for Telstra customers is my guess.

Instead of handing over their ROM to Telstra and wiping their hands, they need to work together with Telstra to actually get the ROMs out to the handsets. Samsung is getting a bad reputation in this regard, but it is actually Telstra's fault (Vodafone and Optus are on 2.3.5 as I understand). Better to team up and get the updates out rather than blaming Telstra solely as ultimately hand balling will piss your customers off. Hold Telstra's hand if you have to (and I think you might have to, as the software guys seem pretty damn incompetent).

A new OS probably requires some mods to make it backward compatible on older hardware.

Just like Siri for iphone 4 - root your phone like I'd have to with my Galaxy?

Can you get an optus prepaid and then upgrade faster, then reinsert the Telstra SIM? Would that work?

I bet there will be a small update to ICS by the time Optus & Telstra release the original 4.0. The slow trickle down effect of these updates is frustrating many Samsung GSII customers. The phone may be great but the delays in official updates will make customers think twice about their next mobile purchase. Optus released 2.3.3 (very delayed I might add) for the original Galaxy S. The update had a known battery drain issue. Apparently 2.3.4 fixed the battery problem but do you think Optus will bother to release it? No way. Once the Galaxy S 3 is released, no attention will be paid to SGSII customers either. Too bad if you're only half way through your 24 month contract...

At the risk of getting shouted down, that is one area of some superiority with Apple, in that regardless of the carrier, when they release an update, if your phone is within 2 models of current, you get the upgrade.

No waiting, no begging phone mfr/carrier to let you come out of the dark ages...

If I had a nice shiny G 2S I'd be pretty pissed at Samsung/Optus/Telstra etc if I were not getting the latest updates in a timely manner.

Of course it is one of the downsides to the fragmentation within Android that Phone mfrs first have to possibly tweak the update to play nicely on each model, then get the carriers on board as well.

Also one of the reasons why Google appear to be trying to make their version of open a little less open.
