Budget HTC smartphone specs revealed

Primo to launch at MWC?

HTC's Primo is the latest smartphone to take a turn through the rumour mill and this time some juicy specs have landed on our desks, straight from our anonymous tipster. And there's plenty to get excited about with this budget companion (mocked up by us above) to the HTC Edge and HTC Ville – both of which have already racked up bags of rumour stories in the run up to Mobile World Congress next month.

If you like your phones compact, you'll like the sound of the HTC Primo's 9mm waistline and 3.7in Super AMOLED screen with Gorilla Glass protection – although the screen's resolution has yet to be confirmed.

This lower-specced 2012 offering will also come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich straight out of the box with HTC Sense 4.0 slathered on top but under the Primo's hood there's what could be a slightly disappointing 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor and 512MB of RAM.

The HTC Primo's rear camera won't be far behind the specs of the 8MP snapper featured on the Edge and Ville – it will shoot 5MP stills and 720p video and its iPhone 4S and Nokia Lumia 900 beating f/ 2.0 aperture will let in more light than other smartphone cams – helping you capture that group shot outside the kebab shop. Plus its dual shutter mode means you'll be able to take snaps whilst filming your HD video.

The Primo will come packing Beats Audio tech for bass lovers – as will the HTC Edge and Ville, according to our source – although there's no word on free Beats cans for now.

Chances are the Primo will look absolutely nothing like our mock-up – but we're sure HTC can come up with something better looking than the result of us poking about in Photoshop for ten minutes.
