Intel announces Dell Ultrabook, teases Ivy Bridge model at CES 2012

The current crop of Ultrabooks have just entered centre stage and Intel is already teasing the next big thing...

Intel today announced Dell’s first Ultrabook at CES 2012: the XPS 13. As its name implies, the XPS 13 is a 13in Ultrabook which has been dubbed “an Ultrabook without compromise” by its creators.

Dell’s Vice Chairman of Global Operations Jess Clarke took to the stage during Intel’s CES keynote to show off the new Ultrabook. The XPS 13 boasts a carbon fibre base, a 13in edge-to-edge screen, Intel Smart Connect and a Gorilla glass display. Battery life is rated at 8 hours.

Clarke claimed that Dell’s new model was “more than a pretty face”, and would “set the standard for the industry going forward”. Bold words. While there was no word on pricing, Dell said it would be taking orders from February, so expect a price announcement very soon.

Intel also used its keynote to show off an Ultrabook prototype powered by a next-gen 22nm Ivy Bridge processor. The unit featured a sliding keyboard which allowed it to be turned into a tablet, or slate.

During the presentation, Intel's Chris Otellini cautioned that the model was a "concept car", so don't expect any firm specifications for a while. Stay tuned for more CES products and announcements in the coming days.
