Asus Transformer Prime release date pegged for December

Asus Transformer Prime release date pegged for December

We'll get our hands on the world's first quad-core tablet eventually

First Asus teases us with a purported January release date for its quad-core powerhouse and sequel to the Transformer. Then, its release date was pegged for November 9. Now it would seem Android fans may have to continue fidgeting impatiently while waiting to get finger-friendly with Asus' latest hybrid device as that date looks like it's been pushed back to December 9.

We know the Prime is currently up for pre-order in the US, but those intrepid web hikers over at Engadget have spotted a new pre-order page on Newegg,  which has the US$500 Prime pegged for a December 8 release date.

While this is good news for those drooling over the mere prospect of its quad-core superpowers, all these contradicting release dates, and not even so much as a hint towards Australian pricing, means we're forced to treat this information cautiously. But one thing's certain – we're getting closer and closer to this mighty and highy coveted machine.

Arriving with Gingerbread, the Transformer Prime will come complete with Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad-core Kal-El processor, a USB port and a 10.1in screen into a sleek, supermodel-thin 8.3mm body. The confirmed Ice cream Sandwich update is simply the cherry atop this quad-core flavoured cake.

Is that true? Such a powerful machine only has Gingerbread? Hope that's a typo! You meant Honeycomb right or else I'd rather get a phone.

Sounds a nice piece of kit. Still not convinced about the whole keyboard thing - why not stump up the extra couple of hundred $ and get a decent Ultrabook?

I'd wait for the Ice Cream Sandwich installed version.

There have been other Androids with promised upgrades that never happened or took a lifetime, so seeing is believing.

yer hope you meant honeycomb... why would they release it with a phone OS when they already have the original transformer running honeycomb???

And amcmo, of course it will get ICS, after all it was used to develop ICS... not to mention ASUS have been one of the better OEM's for updating. god they have even done better than the xoom.

The Ice Cream Sandwich update - have to fix volumegate first - presumably means it is nearly ready for their hardware too.
Phone version is supposedly ready for roll-out :)

This is something innovative that does NOT look like tablets of old - you know the 10+ plus year old designs - those mostly screen with black borders doovers - supposedly 'invented' more recently - yawn.

If priced right things like this will sound the final bell for netbooks and makes the functionality of the tablets a little lacking..

There have been IOS devices with bits that don't work properly too. Is that anti-android hobby horse rubbing you raw yet?

What this thing DOES look like is a bloody good idea ... a real keyboard! This changes everything - oh yeah that slogan's been misused before ...

No hobby-horse, fact is updates to later versions of Android have been promised , then unpromised. All I'm saying is i'd wait for the version that ships with the update.

With the keyboard it is dangerously close to being an underperforming version of an ultrabook. Price will tell on that score.

If the price is right, netbooks are dead unless there is some compelling size/weight advantage that I just don't see happening.
