Tech deals: JB Hi-Fi now offering cheap imported cameras on its website

JB Hi-Fi has entered the grey market, with imported Canon and Nikon cameras available at slashed prices on the company's web site.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. This seems to be the mantra behind JB HiFi's latest online business venture. The electronics giant is now selling cut-priced products on its web site via direct import. 

Explains the website: "JB Hi-Fi now provides some products acquired from internationally based distributors other than the manufacturer's locally licensed importer. These are referred to as "direct import" products or "grey market" products and will be shipped directly to you from overseas."

This translates to some handsome savings if you choose to purchase your camera from the JB Hi-Fi website. For example, the Canon EOS 600D, which currently retails for $949, is available for just $705 (plus postage). The Nikon D7000, which originally cost $2759, can be snapped up for $1226. SLR lenses, flashes and grips are also available for each brand.

All products come with a JB Hi-Fi warranty and are new, unboxed products (i.e. not refurbished). 

It's worth noting that direct import products are subject to fluctuations of the Australian Dollar with other international currencies, so it's worth keeping an eye on the local exchange rate before making your purchase.

The JB Hi-Fi import scheme follows a similar move by Kogan Technologies, which began selling imported cameras and smartphones on its web site last month. 

While we'd be surprised if many local vendors were happy about this, the bottom line is this means cheaper prices on some products for consumers.

If you look at the full article, it suggests that JB HIFI decided to offer a warranty on these items. Excuse me, but isnt it the law that JBHIFI must provide a full warranty - although I doubt the Australian arm of the manufacturer is under the same obligation. interesting to see what happens if a buyer has to get warranty repairs on any of these cameras - only to find that the camera will need to be returned to hong kong to provide the warranty.

As the retailer, JB are definitely responsible in law.

jb arent necessarily responsible. Whilst they are the retailer that sold you the product, they simply need to offer a "remedy" should an issue occur. Now the law is very grey as to what this is, it means basically jb can give you the suppliers number ie canon, nikon etc. and this would be classed as a remedy, or they can tell you where to send it...again classed a remedy and under australian law this is all they have to do. They do not HAVE to give you a brand new product as many consumers believe. Unfortunarely australian consumer laws are extremely grey and this is where the retailers can get away with doing very little. But most likely they will assist as best they can for the sake of PR LoL

Great to see Kogan now being undercut and not being the cheapest. Hopefully these two companies will continue to feed each other profitless business and riddle away to nothing.

Actually darksider, JB ARE responsible - no grey area at all.

This was well thrashed out when some retailer tried just that a few years back. Don't recall all states involved (NSW was one), however Fair Trading stepped in and smacked the retailer around.

Canon/Nikon have no responsibility on grey market products and as the importer JB MUST provide a remedy. Providing a phone number to someone who has no liability in law is NOT a remedy. They may choose to assist, however that is their choice.

As for rights.

If you receive a faulty product, in most states, and most instances, the consumer has some choices. As a company with on-line presence, we are considered to be domociled in every state for Fair Trading regulations, therefore have looked at our responsibilities in all.

You as the consumer can insist on a full refund, or a new replacement within what is considered a DOA or infant mortality period. The length of that period is about the only grey area.

Outside of that the supplier gets to repair or replace with new or refurbished. There are still circumstances where the consumer can insist on a refund even after the DOA/Infant period.

We have a reasonably effective Fair Trading environment in every state, and Fair Trading will get involved with very little prompting.

Grey marketing works since the local representatives for Nikon/Canon etc. set the RRP (and wholesale supply) prices higher than in other countries. We see the same with software. Hence the success of on-line purchasing from overseas.

Have absolutely no issue with grey marketing where there is a substantial unexplained price differential, provided the grey marketer stands behind the product and offers the same warranty as the factory.
