iPhone developer activates hidden panorama function in Camera app

There's a hidden panorama function in the iOS Camera app – but you'll need to jailbreak your iPhone to use it.

There are plenty of panorama creation apps in the iTunes store – like Photosynth and 360 Panorama. But despite adding some new camera functions in iOS 5, Apple hasn't included a panorama function in its official Camera app.

Or has it?

iPhone developer chpwn has released a tweak called Firebreak that switches on a hidden panorama feature in the iOS 5 Camera app.

If you've got a jailbroken iPhone 4 or 4S, Firebreak's available for free under the BigBoss repository on Cydia.

Search for Firebreak then download and install it – and as if by magic, you'll be able to snap panoramic shots in the iPhone's iOS 5 Camera app.

 Wow, I thought they wouldn't keep this up their sleeve ... for the 'special' customer only?

Most recent mid+ phones from Sammy (and other 'droids I believe)can shoot panoramas. I just tried it on a Galaxy 'S' - it works pretty well!

There's a good HDR app, too - all this without jailbreaking anything to get hidden functionality.

Does it not work properly? If it does work correctly, why is it hidden from the user who paid for the phone?

 Obviously Apple decided not to release the function.

Photo,in with the conspiracy theory already, (in fact your only reason for the post?)

There are often unreleased capabilities in products released for sale for various technical or marketing reasons - major example overclock locked CPU.

Apple may be holding it back for a firmware upgrade, may have intended to have it, but not satisfied with the performance, who knows, however Apple's decision to make.
