Siri silence leaves iPhone users in the dark

Siri silence leaves iPhone users in the dark

Voice-recognition system hit by server outage, users report.

Apple is under fire after the standout new addition to the iPhone 4S – personal assistant Siri – went walkabout for the second time.

Although the service is now back up and running, users yesterday reported radio silence when they asked questions of the iPhone's voice-activated helper.

Apple has yet to explain the outage, the second time the system has failed since it launched last month, but posters on the company's forums shed more light on the issue.

“It goes away to think for quite a while with a spinning glow and returns with 'Sorry, something's gone wrong. Can you try that again?' or something similar each time,” said pgoldie on a 17-page Apple Discussion thread on the subject that has been read by 25,000 visitors.

“Then it just said out loud (but did not write out) 'Sorry, I'm having trouble connecting to the network'. I'm on Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi is working well for other apps. Maybe their servers are overwhelmed?”

We have yet to hear back from Apple about the issue, but some users on the forum highlighted the fact that the service remains in beta.

Beta? For a production phone? Along with battery issues, ill timed to say the least.

So a couple of minor glitches in the early days of a new feature. Perhaps too many nerds asking Siri to marry them or have sex. Sounds like te servers were overwhelmed for a few moments.

Beta on a program out in common use is not unusual. I seem to remember a major program in public beta for over 2 years.

The reviews of Siri are overwhelmingly positive.

As for SUPPOSED battery issues, seems some users are having shorter than expected battery life when location tracking is turned on. I am not one of them. Reports are that a bug was introduced with the GM go iOS5

As previously mentioned I finally replaced the n96 with an iPhone after a side by side with the 2S. No battery problems at all.

C'mon Photo, you need to use a few more brain cells on your next anti-Apple rant.
