Intersting that retailers beleive that consumers want/need both a laptop and a tablet. goes so far against the grain of certain industry forecasters ie death of the pc caused by the adoption of tablets. So is this just another attempt to clear tablets that cant sell?
Comment made about the PC & Tech Authority article: Tech deals: Buy a Toshiba laptop, get a Toshiba tablet free? Harvey Norman is offering a free 16GB AT100 tablet to customers who buy a Toshiba laptop valued at $1000 or more.

Sounds like it. Do a give away like this and a good part of the market won't see it as an admission of failure per the HP selloff. |

I'll say it again.. there isn't a tablet market, there's an iPad market. Perhaps a Kindle Fire market as well now which I think will sell like hotcakes in the US. But that's it. |

shopbot.com tells me I can have the Toshiba Satellite P750/02J for $999.00. The tablet can be had for ~$445.00
So would I buy a notebook for more than I'm prepared to pay and receive a pad that I'd probably not use from Gerry?
I don't think so.

Full size USB port (robust), HDMI output for connecting up a HDTV (standard), an SD card reader (cheap memory) and Honeycomb. What's not to like? Cameras - ho hum, have plenty of those usually at least 2 on me at any time ...
If you don't need the tablet, but want the laptop (Toshibas are supposed to be quite nice) flog the tablet off on eBay, sealed in its box...
If you can't get at least $250 for (makes a nice discount on the laptop!) email me - I'll take it :)
Amazon WILL take a bite out of the apple - AND introduce a whole new bunch of consumers to tablet ... at least in the US
Waiting ...

I saw the offer and then went out and ordered a Lenovo Thinkpad tablet... 32Gb, 3G, masses of ports and a digitiser pen. Beats an iPad or A100 into the ground.
By the way, this is being typed on my 7" Kogan while I sit outside Macca's :) |

Not possible WD - there IS no other tablet than ipad :-({|= \:d/ :-({|=
Back on earth ... Lenovo Thinkpad tablet - looks great, super screen and connectivity as you say.
An aside ... Friends from OS sported a Lenovo laptop/tablet hybrid. The one where the screen flips to become a tablet.
There are many more tablet permutations than 5 years ago ... this one worked very well.
The digitiser pen works well too - she's an interior architect and used it for work while staying with us.

No one suggested that there's no other tablet than iPad.
Was is known is that currently every other tablet is struggling to sell against iPad.
Focus all you want on ports or stylus, however to this point no reputable review has found a Tablet that truly competes, other than possibly Samsung.
I'm pleased that someone found a use for a Kogan, however again, the specs and in depth tests show it to be a VERY POOR piece of kit. |

Well they are fairly cheap. If you're not sure you want something like this who shell out a lot of loot until you do?
From above ... "I'll say it again.. there isn't a tablet market, there's an iPad market. Perhaps a Kindle Fire market as well now which I think will sell like hotcakes in the US. But that's it."
I think the market might diversify into "small and large book sized devices with touch screens".
I know, diversity is a "dog's breakfast" to some observers, which means we have a "dogs breakfast" of people in this country too???
I for one LIKE diversity, in people and in computing gear, camera gear etc. etc.
The tablet-like gear range increases and this means that all of us have a better chance of getting what suits US, rather than what suits the marketing people. |

Apple hasn't sued Lenovo and Amazon yet. I am waiting for the Apple barrister army.
There won't be a real tablet market unless governments fix the shmozzle that is intellectual property law.
Until then Apple will sue the pants off anyone who makes a thin rectangular capacitive tablet computer or smartphone. They would try to patent a rectangle if they could and say they invented it.
They tried to sue for trademark infringments on generic terms such as the words app store. Give me a break! What is this world coming to?

Xerox never went to court over the misappropriation of their name to mean photocopy.
Unfortunately if you don't sue you lose it.
Lucky you lot can keep your possessions safe with a bicycle lock. |

As far as I can see. Apple are suing ONE tablet manufacturer who copied more than just a rectangle.
I was somewhat sceptical until I saw the full breakdown.
The box looks the same, The Unit looks so similar The icon's look so similar. the colours, placement. The PSU looks the same The cable looks the same.
They even used the Apple App store logo in their Samsung in-shop Samsung centres in Europe!
Some lazy ass at Samsung took an iPad and copied it with a couple of minor differences and shipped it. Let's face it, they had a lot of inside knowledge havng worked with Apple on the CPU, etc. Whether you agree with the European Community Patents, or not, that's how the law stands at at present, looks like possibly an Apple win.
In Australia, it's nothing to do with that and all about actual tech patent infringements and Samsung have admitted some infringement and are asking to settle.
Much as you might not like it every company has the right to protect it's IP and many do.
As Rubaiyat pointed out, go ask Xerox,(and Singer), there's a long list. |

The Xerox term for a photocopy actually was to their advantage because at the time it was helping their bottom line. Why would you sue if people associate photocopies with Xerox when Xerox make photocopiers that is like shooting yourself in the foot.
Apple have also sued HTC and are thinking about having a go at Motorola. Why don’t you see the HTC Flyer in Australia yet? I agree with a lot of other posters on this topic there is only the iPad market not the tablet market. It is too easy to get patents and the laws vary too much from country to country.
Apple did not invent the tablet and they did not invent touch screen phones with icons. Icons have been on touch phones for years. Did Apple invent the icon now? That’s a bit rich!
Also you cannot patent a "look" of anything that comes under registered designs in IP law in Australia.
It is funny how people mentioned cables and PSU look the same all cables look the same and as far as power supplies go who cares about the shape as long as it does the job and you can plug it into the wall easy without blocking other plugs. What difference does it make if rounded or squared?

Check the iPad PSU (in the US at least), it doesn't look like any other, except the new Samsung one that looks like a 31/32nd copy.
All cables don't look the same, however they look exactly the same when you copy the size and format of the Apple iPod/iPhone connector which was very different to all others until Samsung decided otherwise.
As for look, different compuntries handle the registration or patenting differently, though all designed to protect the original design from copies.
The whole Xerox thing is that by not chasing aggressively their brand was diluted as people associated a Xerox machine with any brand, not necessarily a Xerox. |

@amcmo - re the Lenovo Tablet: yet again you are dissing a machine you've not used. I can promise you that when you get your hands on one of these it will knock your socks off (tho maybe not literally?). It isn't just on paper this tablet crushes the iPad2, it does the same thing in real life.
I bought the machine for my wife to use and she's just already been blown away by how effective is for business use. The supplied apps, the security and the sheer build and functionality of this tablet surpassed anything I (and she) expected.
By the way, this wasn't an impulse buy. She's had me searching for months for the 'ideal business tablet' and tested every model I have found while travelling in the US, UK and Australia and *nothing* touches the Lenovo.
One example of the solid software implementation is that the wife can already sit in meetings and write quickly and confidently with the stylus as if using a paper notebook and pen!
Whilst I agree other tablets are currently struggling to compete against the iPad, I think there is a strong challenger here. The Lenovo and Thinkpad brands already have huge market penetration because of the IBM legacy so businesses that have previously held back on purchases might well take to this like a duck to water as an adjunct to existing hardware.
This is a solid business machine... but it is so much more. The ports, the connectivity and the functionality make this the first 'real' computer in tablet format I've seen. Despite it being larger than my preferred 7" format, I'm quite seriously considering buying a 64Gb model for myself! :) |

Right on WD, My friend from OS was tiring text while onthe phone to the staff back home and making interor architectural design specification and drawing changes.
It seemed to me it made her life very easy indeed. She played with an ipad one of her subordinates had briefly - her laptop was 'old' - ipad not up to par. She purchased the Lenovo the following week - for real work and from what I could see is productive and happy.
AM - are you serious? I'm going to play even though it must surely be a game you play above???
The box looks the same? -- Samsung's are black, not white and yes, is IS A BOX some products are delivered in WHITE ones - nearly ALL boxes look like - oh never mind ...
The Unit looks so similar? -- already debunked a million times, most of the apearance is dictated by trying to shrink-wrap the CASE around the available hardware and presumably get away from the formerly popular million button style.
The icon's look so similar. the colours, placement? -- Big deal and easily changed. A Phone icon looks like a phone ... a mail box icon looks like a - oh never mind.
The PSU looks the same? -- ALL PSUs look much the same - it's a bleedin' plug pack and it looks like - oh never mind.
The cable looks the same? -- The USB end would, the other is different, and - oh never mind ...
Therefore: Apple STOLE the "idea" for boxes, psus, some icons and cables from makers of PREVIOUSLY EXISTING equipment?? Well it looks like that according the above and previously expressed "logic".
And THAT: leaves the LG PRADA shape, size and low button count that Apple copied and has been criticised about for good reason.
And here's another tablet desigh - RIPPED OFF - concept and all. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1381528/Knight-Ridder-tablet-looks-just-like-iPad-17-YEARS-OLD.html
Doesn't matter they couldn't make it yet - or make it themselves - THEY thought of it and you have previously implied that's all that is important.

Over two weeks to research that, Photo?
The breakdown of the two side by side on any number of blogs and news articles shows a disturbing similarity.
You can say what your like about some does-nothing prop on a picture from 20 years ago, however they did just that - nothing, none of the logic, the ability to make it work. The German courts took a totally different view to you - and they are legal experts as opposed to...?)
You continue to go on abut Apple having ripped off all and sundry, however no one has put their hand up to say 'that's mine' and with the hundreds of $ millions to be had, you can bet anyone who thought they seriously had a case would be at it already. Not a legal 'expert' anywhere backing your claims...
As for PSU - many look like a brick with a cord at each end (THEY all look similar), or any one of the various plug packs, most of which look different. In this case, it was a US plug Pack that looks EXACTLY the same apart from being a 31/32nd copy. So Samsung managed to shave 0.2mm of each dimension - that appeared to be the ONLY difference. Nokia, Toshiba, you name, all managed to make theirs different.
The cable - BOTH ends look the same, the industry standard USB one end - no copying there - and the other end - a copy of the Apple iPod/iPhone connector. THAT is what's the same about the cable!
WD,
I have tried Lenovo, Toshiba, Xoom against our in house iPad, as has our in house iPad user and a couple of others. You're welcome to prefer the Lenovo, however I and all but one of our staff disagree. I fired the one who disagreed with me! (seriously, he prefers the Lenovo GUI)
The iPad works better with Exchange Server, than others.
I find the iPad more intuitive as did all others.
The ports are of no consequence to us as all connectivity is WiFi. If we need to transfer anything, we do it with a $10 app over wifi, or for pics and media, over one of the adapters in the Apple kit.
Before you go on about the Apple needing adapters, because we hardly use them, we don't need the case 'bulking up' to enable hardly used connectors.
The whole thing about the iPad is you don't need a stylus (went out with iPaq's), and you can take notes with a finger, or if you really must, there are styli that work just fine. we have a note taking app (can't remember the name off top of head), that organises handwritten text and drawings just fine. (So I'm told, I don't use it)

Only saw the 5 point bleat a few minutes ago AM.
Aastic plugpack - uses don't see that until AFTER they buy, so it certainly can't enhance sales ... what a STUPID thing to complain about. Stupid of them to choose the same unnecessarily LARGE connector, though.
Portable: "The Tablet was created by a team of journalists, designers and researchers. It was never made available to the public." Too old? SO what? Didn't work? so what? the IDEA was already there to COPY COPY COPY? Oh so creative ... It is OK if some companies blatantly rip off ideas but not for others to make something remotely similar?
As for the Lenovo - a recognised interior architect, responsible for some impressive places chose it and considered the pad inadequate. A substantial income depends on a fully functional and responsive toolset, more swaying than a test run, IMO.
I didn't play, I just watched the (very quick) work

Photo,
The plug pack was just one of a whole raft of items.
When they did the unpack side by side, you could have sworn they came from the same mfr.
There's a whole raft of legal opinions, however at this point, the courts (who don't have to listen to all the '15 minutes of fame' legal opinion writers) make the decisons. AT THIS POINT they agree wiht Apple on balance. |

Who cares, AM..
It's a flamin' charger, not an object of worship. They probably have the audacity to use a cable with a PLUG at both ends too. Damn! the box is rectangular and there are pieces of PAPER inside - LIKE EVERY OTHER CONSUMER PRODUCT FFS!
Shame? Or, time for them to get a life and catch up with the real world. Advantage Android. Bleat in court or fight back with better product. Their choice.
And many of those included items looking the same (apart from being generic commodities that no one gives a toss about the looks of)? They probably DID come from the same manufacturer - as opposed to that MARKETER of CE goods.
Or are you telling me it is Apple religion to also worship the charger?
They REALLY need to get a life. Next they'll say they invented the sun ...

Yes, the findings DO explain some things.
It is computer gear FFS ... life actually goes beyond the machinations of one brand and its idiosyncratic, hypocritical, thieving prophet.
He wanted his OWN mobile phone network! What, so only HIS users could call each other? Cosy Microcosm of the insane - communication should be inclusive as far as practicable - NOT a closed club.
