Tech deals: Kogan challenges Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi with free TV offer

Crack out your catalogues. Kogan is offering a free TV if you can find a better price at Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi.

We expect a few people will be frantically checking prices at Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi today. Online electronics retailer Kogan is advertising a free Kogan TV if you can find "a better advertised price for a LCD or LED TV" at either rival shops.

As you'd expect, there's some fine print attached. The TV has to "have the same features", which means it has to be the same size, panel type (LED or LCD). The Kogan site also states the TV must have the same resolution and feature set, listing HD, Full HD, and built-in DVD as examples, which might narrow down the field a bit.

Kogan hasn't listed an end date on the promotion, but says it reserves the right to close the promotion at its discretion. It says customers should check the Kogan web site before making a claim to see if the offer is still open.

The Kogan web site also states one claim only can be made per person. It also states you'll need to allow two months from the date of claim to receive your gift.

There are various other terms and conditions - go to the Kogan site to read the rest.

Given Kogan's self proclaimed reputation for low prices, we'll be interested to hear from anyone who actually manages to receive a free TV from this offer.

Ruslan Kogan is doing well with his various "free" plugs in the media lately that's for sure - good on him... and everyone's old mate Gerry Harvey has stopped whining about Rick Hart (apparently it's good news now!) Maybe Ruslan and Gerry can open a shop together so we can get good brands and reasonable prices from the same retailer! ;-)

Seems the ACCC are going to be taking an interest!! The terms of the advert are attracting the wrong sort of comment from rival retailers! :)

Just a thought,

Motormouth Kogan advertises this TV around $10 below JB, though has no expenses in bricks and mortar shops, retail staff, all the costs of running a warehouse plus retail outlets around the country.

Bit of a rip-off, he should be selling substantially lower if so concerned about value to the customer, instead of pocketing most of the cost difference.

For a $10 to 15 price difference on something like a TV, I'd support the local shop. I can go there see the product, have someone local to get up if any problems, and supporting more local employment. As for the free TV, 'check to see if the offer is still available before claiming' sounds as though he's hedging his bets. Saw him on TV this week. Came across as a self-serving shonk IMHO.

That said, I'd never buy what I consider to be 1-2 generations old tech. Pay a little more and get the latest tech with a reputable manufacturer behind it.
