Small business tech: Free Office 365 ebook for download

The answer to your server nightmares, or waste of time? Judge for yourself.

Of all the products aimed at small businesses, Microsoft's Office 365 is one of the most interesting so far this year.

In theory, it's the answer to some of the server problems small offices have been wrestling with for years. An Internet hosted version of Exchange, as well as online versions of Sharepoint, CRM and even Word and Powerpoint, the suite lets you pay a monthly fee for each user (about the price of a sandwich, as Microsoft likes to say), and offload the maintenance and the actual server itself to someone else.

We imagine it takes no small amount of bravery to take a box that might be running under a desk, or if you're lucky, in a server rack in your office where you can go in the event of a failure and physically check the machine - to having it all sit online, somewhere in the bowels of a Microsoft data centre.

As you can tell, one of the major selling points of Office 365 is having access to your data wherever you go

If you're curious about the advantages, Microsoft Press has turned Office 365: Connect and collaborate virtually anywhere, anytime into a free to download eBook. You'll get mostly positive spin about the product, but this basic user's guide does at least offer some practical examples of what Office 365 lets you do.

If you're using Office 365, or you're a small business running your own server, we'd like to hear about what issues you're running into. Add your comments below or email us at inbox at pcandtechauthority.com.au.

depends on what you call a small business. We run a Server 2008 at work. Every now and then, it gets all huffy about an external hard drive attached via usb. The fix - remove the hard drive or suffer a very slow server. Also - need to reboot server every 4 weeks or so - again more problems with server speed. If the internet goes down - standard isp support response, reboot your computer -just not feasible to kick 12 or so users off just to get the internet working again!
Biggest problem with a server 2008 - dealing with security levels. Installing software or even devices on Windows XP machines is an absolute dog - Windows Xp just does not play well with Server 2008.
Finally, given the role of the server in providing access back to the internet, just how do you get all the users on the internet to use Office 365 - without a server?

Petergaskin,

Agree totally with your 2008 comments. We use R2 and SQL server 2008, Exchange 2007.

Since changing it has been a nightmare of endless issues with permissions, issues on databases, hissy fits with PC's being added and not playing nice with XP.

After all the hassles, we're sitting on our hands on the upgrade to Exchange 2010, and even evaluating going to hosted Exchange.

As an SMB IT provider I would suggest that you need someone with knowledge to look over your systems and advise. Honestly, done correctly Windows servers have very few issues. However, like anything else if they are configured incorrectly all sorts of problems do raise their heads.

If you are interested I am happy to put you in contact with someone who could assist and at least provide a no obligation report on the setup. If so please email me directly at director@ciaops.com.

I am simply trying to help here as you honestly shouldn't be having those problems.

Thanks

Have about 15 users. In general love the new server. it works that much better than the old novell server. As configured, it runs rings around anything we had in the past - except when the usb issue raises its ugly head.
What is most impressive is that I am sort of running most of the day to day issues, and I am an accountant - with no formal computer education at all.
This is also my first experience with a windows server!
Have run with everything from DEC systems to a system with vdus attached.
Google has become my friend.
Will put up wih the Xp issues. Will probably wait another couple of years until all our XP machines finally die!

We have been an MS partner for 10 years, and feel that they have made many half-cocked changes to Server products along the way.

Our IT guys fell out of love with MS some years back.
