Sony slashes PS3 price and reveals new details about PlayStation Vita

PlayStation 3’s price takes a tumble, a new PSP, plus PS Vita and 3D Display details

Sony has slashed the price of the PlayStation 3 worldwide, detailed the launch of PlayStation 3D Display, and revealed the social media features of the PlayStation Vita.

And, to cap it off, unveiled a brand new PSP.

With immediate effect, the price of the 320GB PlayStation 3 has been slashed to AUD$449.95. The 160GB version has also received a price-drop, falling from $499 to $349.95. While the new pricing is certainly welcome, it's worth noting that the 320GB PlayStation 3 now costs just $299 in the US - a difference of more than $150.

Sony also used its presentation at Gamescom to announce that the PlayStation Vita’s suite of social media features will include the ability to connect with Facebook, Twitter and Skype.

The next-generation handheld console, which will be available in Wi-Fi and 3G models, will also offer an internet browser and voice-and-text chat with multiple people.

Sony also announced that its low cost 3DTV set up – the PlayStation 3D Display – will be launched this spring and will cost  $US49 including two sets of 3D glasses (extra glasses will retail for $US69.99). The 24in display is geared towards gaming and also features technology that allows two players to see completely separate images on the same screen.

Sony also announced a brand new PSP model that will cost $139.95 and launch before Christmas. Sony described the revamped console, which doesn’t offer Wi-Fi connectivity, as an “entry level handheld.”

Several new Vita games were announced as well including a version of Assassin’s Creed, a new addition to Sony’s first-person shooter series – Resistance: Burning Skies – and an augmented reality fighting game called Reality Fighters that uses the Vita’s cameras to turn the world around the player into the arena.

Why is it that Australia, once again, is ripped off with pricing. Our dollar is above parity with the USD yet we get hit with and extra $150 over what the Americans pay? It cant be that they make more 110 volt machine hence they are cheaper to produce because the PS3 Im sure is multi voltage compliant. And don't say it costs more to transport them into Australia. We are a hell of a lot closer to Japan then America is. Retailers wonder why online shopping is a soaring in popularity. $150 is after all, $150.

Don't want any of these, but agree with the price gouging lament. There's no justification.
Companies that do this DO contribute to the downfall of local retail businesses IMO once the retailers are gone, who will sell them IN Austrlalia?.

Why does Sony try so hard to make me never want a PS3 instead of trying to convince me to buy one? I can see a price difference of say $50 with the US but $150 sounds more than a tad like price gouging. Considering in the US, you never really ever have to pay RRP or you get alot more bundled in with the base package, this price drop doesn't even come close to persuading me to cut over to the PS3. Oh and that little thing about the Playstation Network outage back in April is still fresh in everyone's minds.
I just checked a US website and Sony is offering a limited edition PS3/360gb and Infamous 2 bundle for USD299. Be interesting if they offer the same here.

opps I meant 320gb instead of 360gb...must be a bit of internal fanboi-ism going inside my mind. :)

Have never been interested in one, however what's the output on the US models NTSC?

I'd love to see a breakdown of the costs to see where that extra $150 goes. I know there's some in wage costs, and while we are closer to Japan, our US office gets freight cheaper than we do, but not $150 per unit. Who's pocket (other than GST) get's the rest?

I seen a breakdown on the PS3 costing a few months ago and the bloke reckoned it cost more to make then what they were selling it for. He said they make the money out of the games hence they can sell below cost. Now having said that I cant see Sony paying the prices us mere mortals pay for components so Im finding that hard to believe. I like playing Modern Warfare on line on my sons PS3. Thats the only reason I play it at all.
