The notorious hacking group collectively known as 'Anonymous' has released a new video in which they announce plans to destroy Facebook. Or at least, someone claiming to be Anonymous has released the video.
The new YouTube clip accuses the social networking site of selling information to government agencies and security firms for spying purposes, including infosec firms working for Egypt and Syria.
The video goes on to criticise Facebook's transparent privacy settings before promising a day of reckoning "that will go down in history": November 5th, 2011.
"Attention citizens of the world: we are Anonymous. Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed, " the video states.
"If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook for the sake of your own privacy. ...We are Anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us."
It's worth noting that Anonymous has made no mention of this video on its Twitter feed or elsewhere; which would seem to suggest that the clip is fake. It also lacks the polished audio production values of previous clips, such as the infamous Message To Sony video.
Regardless of the video's true origin, it would seem that Facebook's attempts to clean up its image in regards to user security and privacy has not appeased everyone. We'll keep you posted with more updates, as they happen.
